Started in 2001, the Dot NAME TLD is the only one planned for personal sites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to register john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level domains remained running.
